Some video projects become difficult before editing even begins. One clip comes from an iPhone as MOV, another from an Android phone as MP4, and an older camera supplies AVI. The files may also disagree about resolution, frame rate, codec, orientation or audio. A traditional workflow asks you to convert every source first, check the exports, and only then join them. That is a lot of preparation for a simple goal: combine different video formats into one watchable file.
Why mixed-format clips cause trouble
A file extension describes a container, not the complete media profile inside it. Two MP4 files can still use different codecs, dimensions or frame rates. A MOV may contain a phone recording with a variable frame rate, while an AVI from an older camera may have a smaller image and no audio track. A basic concatenation command can reject the set, produce a file with a broken timeline, or create visible jumps when the player changes properties between segments.
Manual conversion with a command-line tool such as FFmpeg is powerful, but it requires you to choose a profile, inspect each result and remember every input. A desktop editor can do the same job, but it adds an import, project and export workflow. For a short collection of clips, the conversion step can become the largest part of the task.
